Next Appearance: Middleton Cheney Fete

IPMS Middleton Cheney is pleased to announce that we will be displaying at next weekend’s Middleton Cheney Fete on Sunday 5th June.

We’re delighted to be able to support local events and hope visitors enjoy our display. It provides a great opportunity for the club to make its presence known within the community, as well as give the model-making hobby exposure to the general public. Budding model makers and experienced hands, young and old, don’t always realise there might be a club for them in their neighbourhood and therefore local events give us a platform to recruit new people into the hobby.

If you plan on attending, we look forward to seeing you there!

WATCH: Our display featured in Sci-Fi & Fantasy SIG’s ModelKraft video

Courtesy of the fantastic efforts of John Marriott, you can view all of the brilliant science fiction and fantasy models that were on display at this year’s ModelKraft show in Milton Keynes in the video below. In addition, he has kindly made a special feature of our own 50 Years of Star Trek display in the video, which you can watch from 6:33 onwards.

Our thanks to John and everyone at the Sci-Fi and Fantasy SIG for featuring us! If you’re interested in joining the SIG, you can email scifisig@hotmail.com

Report: 2016 IPMS Gloucester Show

Our third model show in six weeks! Following on from the Poole Vikings show and ModelKraft, IPMS Middleton Cheney made its debut at IPMS Gloucester’s show on the 8th May. It was an absolutely beautiful day, a shame to be inside perhaps, but seeing lots of new stuff and being able to display our 50th anniversary of Star Trek feature made up for it!

The show itself was a lovely, cosy affair and we were impressed with the sheer number of clubs and traders accommodated in the venue, so kudos to IPMS Gloucester for getting us all in! We had lots of interest in our Star Trek display which was nice to see. As sci-fi subjects tend to be more niche, especially on the show scene, with our sci-fi expert members we have a fantastic opportunity to really bring something different and unique to a model show, and the interest we receive as a result is a great reward. Top tip to other clubs: the young ‘uns love a bit of popular culture!

IMG_3887

While at ModelKraft we had our whole stand dedicated to Star Trek, in Gloucester we had a few F1 cars creep into proceedings as well, courtesy of James! There was no doubt about the main theme though, and we’ll be carrying this through the other shows we attend right until the end of the year.

IMG_3893

Our thanks go out to IPMS Gloucester for the invitation and for putting on a great show! Now we have a brief rest before the preparation begins for the big one at the Bloxham Steam Rally at the end of June…

Are you a budding model builder, or an experienced hand, and live in the Banbury area? Young or old, we’re always on the lookout for new members! Whatever your interest, why not pop along to our next meeting, which will be on the 19th May. All the details on how to get there can be viewed here.

Report: 2016 ModelKraft Show

Just under two weeks ago IPMS Middleton Cheney attended the ModelKraft show in Milton Keynes. Always a well-attended event with plenty to look at, 2016 was no different! As one of the nearest shows to our club, we always like to make an appearance and this year was the perfect occasion to properly debut our special Star Trek display which made its debut in limited form at the Poole Vikings show two weeks previously.

With ModelKraft traditionally featuring a strong sci-fi contingent it was the perfect venue to get the display out there in final form, and it’s not for the faint-hearted! Featuring a whole range of Starfleet ships and many alien vessels too, the aim is to cover as many areas within the Star Trek history. With the original series having been first aired in 1966, it’s a history that covers 50 years in 2016, hence it being our focus for our show displays this year.

We had a great time at the show, and it’s always great to see the interest in what we do, so if you were there and stopped by our stand, then thanks! Also, thanks to Milton Keynes Scale Model Club for putting on another fantastic event.

Next up for us is the IPMS Gloucester Show this Sunday, 8th May. If you’re attending we look forward to seeing you there!

2016 Event Schedule

Visitors already familiar with our website may have noticed our event calendar in the right column of the page. With this list evolving and with new events being added over time, here is a run-down of what IPMS Middleton Cheney will be getting up to in 2016.

So far, we have already made an appearance at Geek Con Banbury, the first sci-fi/comic/film fan event to be held in the town, giving us a great opportunity to reach out to local enthusiasts and potential new modellers, both young and old and grow the club’s membership.

Last week we also made our first appearance on the show circuit for the year when we displayed at the Poole Vikings club’s show. There we scooped the trophy for best visiting club display with the debut of our Star Trek theme.

Coming up, we will be returning to ModelKraft in Milton Keynes next week, and two weeks later we will make our debut at IPMS Gloucester’s show. Then, at the end of June, our annual ‘big one’ at the Bloxham Steam Rally where we’ll occupy a ludicrous amount of table space – it has to be seen to be believed!

Going into the second half of the year, we’re looking forward to making a first visit to another show, this time the Midland Expo in Birmingham, and then in August returning for a second time to IPMS Avon’s show in Thornbury.

In addition to these shows, we also have a number of other events in the pipeline that are awaiting confirmation. As and when we get the green light, the news will be up here immediately, so stay in touch!

We hope to see you around at one (or more!) of these shows over the year!

Report: 2016 Poole Vikings Show

Our first show of 2016 took place on the 9th April, the Poole Vikings club’s annual show. This was our third year attending, and for this year, the show marked the debut of our latest display. Featuring as many Star Trek models as we can, we’re marking 50 years of this hugely popular science fiction franchise.

Whilst our display at the weekend was somewhat unfinished, by the time our next appearance on the show circuit comes around in two weeks’ time at Milton Keynes, you can rest assured it will look even better! As well as the display however, we’ve also dispensed with our regular green club shirts, and replaced them with a uniform that befits an Enterprise’s crew!

IMG_3855

Clearly our efforts made an impression on those at the show, as we ended up being awarded with the Best Visiting Club Display trophy. Very nice indeed, and our gratitude goes out to everyone at Poole Vikings for inviting us, and putting on an excellent event. In addition, Martin and Sam were delighted to pick up ‘highly commended’ certificates for entries into the various competition categories!

If you haven’t attended the show before, we highly recommend it. Always friendly, and with some outstanding models and displays on show, there’s a reason we keep coming back every year. Now we’re just waiting for 2017! See below for more photos of our stand from the event.

2016 AGM Report

Our 2016 AGM was held during our monthly club meeting on 14th January. As usual, all four of the committee provided a summary of activities during 2015, and these are outlined below. With no new nominations, all four were re-elected for another twelve month term.

The recruitment side of the club received particular emphasis during the AGM and there was a debate on how the club can attract new members. In particular younger and female members are a priority. The club prides itself on being open to all and having a number of younger members with a range of interests, but this can always be improved upon. If there are no new younger members coming into the hobby in general then in a matter of decades there will be no more hobby at all. A quick scan around any model show will confirm this and therefore it is the duty of all clubs and societies within the hobby to make building model kits attractive to a younger audience. At the AGM, the club agreed that a number of actions should be taken to try and boost recruitment for the club in 2016. Chief of these is a redesign of the club’s advertising and marketing material. New information cards have been drawn up and purchased, and a series of posters will be designed and displayed at local toy/hobby shops in Banbury and will join us at shows, along with the cards. The club will make efforts to attend events outside of the regular show circuit, including Geek Con Banbury on 30th January, our regular appearance at Bloxham Steam Rally in June, and other potential events still in the pipeline. Finally, running events with clubs such as the scouts has worked well in past years and there was agreement that this should be explored as a potential option again.

The AGM also presented an opportunity to run through the list of shows the club will attend in 2016. Currently the full list runs to approximately nine or ten shows meaning one of the busiest years in the club’s existence. Whilst attention has turned to new shows more further afield in the last couple of years – Poole and IPMS Avon’s show in Thornbury for example, there’s a desire to look north and look at the possibility of attending events in the Birmingham area as it’s something the club has yet to do.

Financially, the club remains in a healthy position with a strong regular group of members attending meetings, contributing to club funds and allowing for the hire of the Parish Meeting Rooms. Subs will remain unchanged at £3 per month.

The club’s online presence steadily grew over the course of 2015. The Facebook page had reached 558 likes by the time of the AGM and continues to grow, with followers of the page from all over the world. It is one of the most popular IPMS club pages on Facebook and the intention is to build on this with a greater frequency of shared photos and news to make the page even more attractive. The website saw fewer updates, but as can be seen here, plans for a refresh were in the pipeline and have since been made a reality, allowing for better communication with coordinated posts here and on Facebook, and also a generally more impressive, professional presence. In an area that is sorely lacking regarding the hobby as a whole, the club takes its online presence very seriously and as a key way to encourage new people into the hobby.

Therefore, going into 2016, IPMS Middleton Cheney finds itself in a healthy position with new faces, new plans and new shows to attend all at the forefront of what the club will do over the year. Here’s to another fun and exciting 12 months!

You can read more on the club’s committee here. Any questions on the matters above can be submitted via the comments section below, or via email to Sam, the club secretary at sam-evins@hotmail.co.uk
