Better late than never as they say! IPMS Middleton Cheney made its second appearance at IPMS Avon’s annual show at Thornbury Leisure Centre in South Gloucestershire on 7th August 2016.
As usual for what is a large and always well-attended show, we had an excellent time. Of particular enjoyment at this particular event is the increased presence of wargaming. IPMS Middleton Cheney has historically maintained a good wargames following – it’s often how younger modellers get into the hobby and both club secretary Sam and webmaster James came through various Games Workshop games while growing up. Thus, we always do our best to accommodate any club members interested in worshipping the dice gods! At the IPMS Avon show there’s the opportunity to get involved with many different games and this year we thought we’d get in on the action and have a Dreadfleet game set up, using the set owned by club member Richard Coughtrey.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Dreadfleet was a game made by Games Workshop for a short period from 2011. It is set within the Warhammer Fantasy world and places the players in command of ships sailing on the high seas of the Warhammer world.
Here, both Sam and Richard are taking the game for a spin, and Richard was on hand to answer questions and provide information for the many interested parties. It was nice to be offering something different! But of course alongside the Dreadfleet game we had our regular display for 2016, the Star Trek 50th Anniversary set, with some of James’ F1 cars completing our spread. As always, the Star Trek feature caught many eyes, and during the day we were delighted to be offered the chance to display at the Sutton Coldfield Model Spectacular show in September. You can watch a video of our display from that show in the post below.
You might have noticed that our regular tablecloths were missing! Unfortunately we forgot to pack them, and an early morning message to James to rustle up some emergency covers resulted in this. A spare curtain from his airing cupboard and a Marussia F1 flag. Not a disaster by any stretch in the end! The show itself was of a far better organisation, and our thanks go to IPMS Avon for once again putting on a superb event! Definitely one of our favourites for its size and variety, we’ll be back for sure!
It’s been a bit quiet lately on the website, but here’s a treat for you. Sam and Matt travelled up to the Sutton Coldfield Model Spectacular on 11th September and with them came our Star Trek display as we made our debut at our most northerly show in the club’s history!
Both had a great time at a new show, and Matt got all technological and live-streamed a video of our display during the show on Facebook! We saved the video and now you can enjoy it too whenever you want. Check out the video on our Facebook page, and while you’re there, give us a ‘like’ if you haven’t done so already!
Thanks to Sutton Coldfield Model Makers Society for having us along and putting on a great show. We love to be able to do new events – its all about seeing new clubs, new displays and new people. It’s easy to allow the show circuit to get stagnated so freshening it up with some new appearances always gets the creative juices flowing once more!
P.S. Those readers who are IPMS members may have noticed an article featuring our Star Trek display in the latest issue of the magazine in September – we’re finally famous! Our thanks goes to the magazine’s editor Don for kindly publishing the article for us, and if you still haven’t seen the display in person for yourself, remember we’ll be at IPMS Abingdon’s show on the 1st October, and also the ‘big one’ – Scale ModelWorld in Telford in November, so catch us while you can!
Show appearances continue to be added for the remaining months of 2016 for IPMS Middleton Cheney. The latest to be confirmed is the Sutton Coldfield Model Spectacular, which will mark the most northerly show the club has attended to date. The show is scheduled for the 11th September, meaning the club will have two consecutive weekends of show activity once again!
Club secretary Sam, and fellow member Matt will be taking the ever-popular Star Trek 50th anniversary display to Sutton Coldfield. We’re looking forward to making our debut and yet another show this year. We’ve had a fantastic calendar of show visits in 2016, and we’re grateful for the invitation to display from the Sutton Coldfield Model Makers Society. Thanks lads!
IPMS Middleton Cheney are delighted to confirm that the club will be attending three more events that will complete the club’s 2016 show season.
Chief of these will be our inaugural appearance at Scale ModelWorld in Telford on the 12th & 13th November. Billed as the largest model show in the world, we’ll be bringing along our 50 Years of Star Trek display for the two day event. It’s always a fantastic show to visit, so being on the other side of the table will make for a fun change and we’re all eagerly looking forward to it!
We are also happy to confirm that we will be returning to the Abingdon IPMS Model Show on the 1st October. As one of our more local shows, the shorter distance makes it a bit easier and we’re looking forward to supporting what is another great show for this year.
Finally, we will also be making an appearance at Banbury Old Town Party on the 3rd September. We’ll be rubbing shoulders with local, independent traders and it will be great to get back out there and show off what we do to the wider public.
With the Midland Model Expo and IPMS Avon’s show also to come, we’re set for a busy second half to 2016!
Over the last few weeks the club has been putting in the hard yards with appearances at two local non-modeling themed events. We like to support local activities as much as possible, not only does it give visitors something else to look at, but it allows us to get into the community, make ourselves visible, and hopefully draw in new members and bring new people into the hobby.
With that in mind, we attended the Middleton Cheney Fete on 5th June, with a gazebo full to bursting with all sorts of our finished work, with some of the flying craft hanging from the gazebo ceiling! With the weather very favourable we had a lovely day and enjoyed meeting new and familiar faces alike.
At the end of June, we then made our annual appearance at the Bloxham Steam Rally where we resumed our huge display in the dedicated modeling tent. Naturally for our centrepiece show, the 50 Years of Star Trek was front and centre, and accompanied by a huge range of kits from our varied and talented membership.
The weather was a bit iffy, but on the most part good and there were plenty of people taking a keen interest in the display and we had lots of fun and interesting conversations with those stopping by. Our thanks goes out to everyone who stopped by at either the Fete, Steam Rally (or both!) and enjoyed what we had to offer. Now the planning starts for next year!
For the full collection of pictures for each event, check out our Facebook page, or Flickr page.

IPMS Middleton Cheney is pleased to announce that we will be displaying at next weekend’s Middleton Cheney Fete on Sunday 5th June.
We’re delighted to be able to support local events and hope visitors enjoy our display. It provides a great opportunity for the club to make its presence known within the community, as well as give the model-making hobby exposure to the general public. Budding model makers and experienced hands, young and old, don’t always realise there might be a club for them in their neighbourhood and therefore local events give us a platform to recruit new people into the hobby.
If you plan on attending, we look forward to seeing you there!
Courtesy of the fantastic efforts of John Marriott, you can view all of the brilliant science fiction and fantasy models that were on display at this year’s ModelKraft show in Milton Keynes in the video below. In addition, he has kindly made a special feature of our own 50 Years of Star Trek display in the video, which you can watch from 6:33 onwards.
Our thanks to John and everyone at the Sci-Fi and Fantasy SIG for featuring us! If you’re interested in joining the SIG, you can email firstname.lastname@example.org
